TIPS TO UPDATE OLD WORLD:
1. Lighten wall colors. If your walls are in shades of gold and brown, update to more modern colors such as light greys, off whites, tans, etc. The newer wall colors are coolers tones without the gold.
2. Update draperies and pillows. Lighter is better! If your home has heavy draperies and pillows in darker colors with tassels and fringe, lighten up. First, can the golds, browns and reds and lighten up the colors to off whites, tans, pastels and cooler colors. Also, modern fabrics are lighter in weight, such as linens and cottons rather than heavy satins and brocades.
3. Update art. Rather than old world scenes such as castles and such in golden, muted colors, update your wall art to a more modern feel with punches of color.
4. Update lighting. If your home is filled with wrought iron chandeliers dripping in crystals, update to more modern lighting. You may still keep the darker metals if you like, but choose less curvy, more simple styles with fewer or no crystals. In terms of lamps, simplify to more modern styles – you might even want to choose some metallic shiny finishes in silver, gold or bronze.
5. Lighten up upholstered pieces. Update older couches and chairs, either by replacing them with lighter colored items or use slip covers or throws to modernize.
6. Update floor coverings. If your area rugs are in reds, browns and golds with swirly designs, inexpensive area rugs may be used to update to a more modern look. Favor more geometric, simple patters in lighter or brighter colors. You might even use a faux fur rug to update the look.
7. Lighten up wood furniture. Curvy, dark, heavy furniture may be updated with a coat of paint. Choose lighter colors or pastels and sand and prepare each piece carefully.
8. Update accessories. Get out the spray paint! To give your accessories a more modern feel, use spray paint in white, off white, pastels or lighter colors. Spraying photo frames, wrought iron wall art and even ceramic pots and decorative items can really add a updated feel.
